Realme 3i Summary

The Realme 3i is a budget offering, which slots between the Realme 3 and Realme C2 in the company’s portfolio. The phone looks convincingly similar to the Realme 3, except for the diamond pattern on the back, instead of a glossy finish. The phone is light and built well. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 SoC and comes with either a 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage or with a 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The phone also runs on ColorOS 6 based on Android 9.0 Pie.

General performance is good. Apps run smoothly and the phone does not heat up too much. The 13MP rear camera has decently quick autofocus, but images are strictly average in most cases. Chroma Boost helps boost colors, and Nightscape helps brighten up low-light scenes, but there is a lot of chroma noise. Battery life is decent as the phone will easily last over a day and half, but charging the phone is a slow process.

Although it has pretty similar specifications with the Realme 3, the Realme 3i has two significant differences, which are its aesthetics and its SoC.

Realme 3i Design and Display

The physical appearances of the Realme 3i are identical to the Realme 3, right down to the last millimeter and gram. It is easy to grip and use with one hand. The primary decorative difference is the use of a matte finish with a diamond pattern on the rear, similar to the C2. The Realme 3i comes in Diamond Black finish (which looks more royal blue than black), in Diamond Blue and Diamond Red, which is a blue-red gradient finish.

It has a 6.2-inch HD+ (720x 1520) IPS LCD touchscreen and is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The bezels are reasonably thin, but the chin is quite pronounced at the bottom. It has a dewdrop notch, which makes it look relatively modern. The display has decent brightness, colors are dynamic, and viewing angles are quite good too. The low resolution is not a significant issue, but you will identify a slight lack of sharpness when matching this display to one with a higher resolution.

The power button and volume rockers on the Realme 3i have a decent response and are placed in a comfortable zone. There is a triple-slot tray on the left, which can hold two 4G SIM card and a microSD card, consecutively. At the bottom, you will find a Micro-USB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and speaker.

The diamond pattern surface offers good grip, and blemishes are not easily noticeable, unlike the glossy Realme 3. The fingerprint scanner is easy to reach and works fine. It also features face recognition too, which, just like previous Realme phones, works quickly.

Specifications and Software

Unlike the Helio P70 on the Realme, the Realme 3i has a MediaTek Helio P60 processor. This is not an immense downgrade, as the P60 is yet a very capable octa-core chip, with enough CPU and GPU performance for its level. The device has two variants which are 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage and 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and both options come with a dedicated microSD card slot for expanding the storage up to 256GB

Other specifications of the Realme 3i include Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, single-band Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, FM radio, USB-OTG, and the usual variety of sensors that we’ve come to expect.

The software is fairly up-to-date. The Realme 3i runs on ColorOS 6, which is based on Android 9.0 Pie.

There are a whole collection of preloaded apps, but at least the third-party apps can be uninstalled. You also get the Smart Sidebar, which can hold shortcuts to apps and can be reached by swiping in from the edge of the screen.

Camera and Battery

Concerning the camera, there isn’t any much is different compared to the Realme 3. The Realme 3i highlights a primary 13MP sensor and a 2MP depth sensor camera when shooting in Portrait mode, with phase detection autofocus (PDAF).

Creative modes such as Nightscape and Chroma Boost are present too. The Chroma Boost should be avoided when shooting plants or leaves as green tones get highly amplified. However, landscapes can benefit from a boost in color.

Nightscape works fine, but not like that on the Realme X mostly due to the constraints of the sensor. Night scenes look good, but there’s lots of grain and color noise.

The 13MP front-facing selfie camera is not too bad. If you are forbearing and the light is good, you could manage to get some pretty useful shots. It has portrait mode too, but the blur effect is too intrusive and looks artificial. and sadly, there is also no way to adjust it.

This smartphone has a 4,230mAh battery, which is very good. With day-to-day usage, we managed to easily get a day and half of runtime, even with a bit of camera use and gaming thrown in.

Unfortunately, there is no fast charging, but the phone can get up to a 50 percent charge in an hour. Charging it to 100 percent takes about two hours more.

The 3GB model sells for about 46,000 NGN while the other 4GB model will sell for 56,000 NGN depending on your location
